This week's SCS Try a New Technique Challenge was to create a BG using balloons w/ small objects in them and stamping w/ them. Needless to say I was intrigued as I'd never heard of doing something like this before! So here's what I did:
Grab a couple of balloons, a measuring cup or spoon, a funnel (this one has a wide opening at the bottom which makes it harder to get the balloon on but easier to get the objects into!) and "small" objects - here I used rice and oatmeal.
Other things you can try are jelly beans, macaroni, orzo pasta, pebbles, sand etc. - pretty much anything that you can fit into the balloon that doesn't have sharp enough edges to tear it.
After putting the balloon on the end of the funnel - fill w/ the objects of your choice. Make sure to get the balloon good and full - Beth recommended approx 1/2 a cup. These balloons were smaller so I used around 3/8ths or so (I realized later tho that I prolly could have got more in them). If the funnel opening isn't big enough to use your fingers to push the objects in - try using the flat end of a pencil or pen. You want everything IN the balloon so when you pull it off you don't have a mess to deal with!
** If there IS too much air and it's hard to get any texture you can poke a sharp pin in the balloon as near to the knot as possible and press out the extra air - it will still work how you want it to and won't tear.
Once you have your balloons - use them like a stamp! Press them into an ink pad (here I used Green Galore Ink on Gable Green CS, and Only Orange Ink and CS) and press them onto the CS. My ink pads were really juicy and I noticed if I pressed too hard when I inked up the balloon that it pressed out most of the texture and I just had a shapeless blob on my CS. Once you play w/ it a for a little while you know how much pressure to use - and it's so simple and easy to do! Here are the finished cards:
Patterned Paper is by Rob & Bob®. CS used: Gable Green, Only Orange, Pixie Pink, Whisper White.
Ink used: Green Galore, Only Orange, Basic Black.
Accessories used: Marvy Giga Scallop Oval Punch, Coluzzle, Gingham (from WalMart), Prismacolor Pencils and Gamsol, hand held Hole Punch.
I hand drew the little grass and flower scribbles.
